Target: Emporia, Kansas

Left Kansas City very late in the afternoon and drove toward Harveyville. Several supercells formed just southwest of me, but nothing produced a tornado. Late in the evening a stronger supercell formed from a congealing of this acivity and proceeded eastward through the Emporia area. I dropped south on Highway 75 toward Olivet, and stopped at Melvern Lake to get photos of the lightning-illuminated supercell. The storm gusted out shortly thereafter, so I raced the outflow eastward through Ottawa, and toward home.

Supercell near Melvern Lake. This storm had a tornado briefly before this image was taken. 70 to 80 mph winds approached this spot as I left.
